Above is a map that represents data from the U.S. Energy Information Agency in 2022. The data is shown in trillions of Btu (British Thermal Units) and includes the nine locations of HPC and bitcoin mining facilities belonging to Core Scientific. Texas is the only state in which Core Scientific has multiple facilities; Texas is also the state with the highest level of energy consumption in 2022, at 1,633.4 trillion Btu. It is important to recognize this fact, but it is also important to highlight that Core Scientific is not the sole contributor to the state’s high level of energy consumption. According to the Texas Data Center Map, featured below, there are a total of 326 data centers in Texas at the time of writing, 157 of which are in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Denton area.
This chart shows the energy output of the Denton Energy Center (DEC), which is a natural gas plant owned by Denton Municipal Electric. The chart shows the correlation between the start of bitcoin mining at Core Scientific and a huge spike of energy usage in the summer of 2022. However, the high usage during that summer can not be entirely attributed to the heat because the second hottest summer recorded in Texas in 2023 made the DEC use less energy.
This map represents the locations of 326 data centers in Texas as of April 26, 2025 according to data from the Texas Data Center Map. There are 166 data centers in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Denton area. There are 49 data centers in Houston, 44 in San Antonio and 33 in Austin.
